Here are some lessons homeowners of the Black Forest and East Peak fires learned this year. You can benefit from their difficult experiences with a few advanced preparations.

-  Prepare a portable file box to hold critical information you will need in the event of a fire and/or evacuation. Include the following:
o  Copies of your important papers (insurance, deeds, titles, safe deposit box key).
o  Pictures of your home, its rooms, and your valuables.
o  Phone numbers for your neighbors and county offices (police, fire, hospitals).
o  A list of emergency web sites (local, state, federal), so you can follow fire updates.
o  A list of medications for each family member, and phone numbers for physicians and pharmacies.
o  A list of valuables and necessities to take with you if you need to evacuate.
o  A detailed map of the ranch.

-  Learn the ranch roads and alternate exits.
-  Plan where your family will go if you have to evacuate and make pre-arrangements with your host, if necessary.
-  Plan where your animals will be housed off the ranch and make pre-arrangements, if possible.
-  Decide how your family will communicate, especially if you are not together at the time of the fire and cell circuits are busy.
